In an effort to alleviate congestion and ensure a seamless commuting experience for travelers using the access road to Madurai International Airport, the state's highways department has initiated a project to expand the 2.5-kilometer two-way road between Avaniyapuram and Perungudi into a dual carriageway. This improvement will cost a total of 125.7 million.
Of all the access roads to the airport, the Avaniyapuram bypass - Perungudi segment of the Madurai-Thoothukudi state highways was the only remaining two-way road, as all others were upgraded to four-lane roads in the past decade.
Recent developments saw the state highway department upgrade two culverts along the 2.5-kilometer stretch. With the completion of the land acquisition procedures, work on the road subdivision has begun. A Kuttiyan, the stateways assistant division engineer, revealed that the current 10-metre-wide two-lane road will be transformed into a 17.5-metre-wide dual carriageway, with a 2.5-metre central reservation.
"The road design will be very similar to the other access roads to Madurai Airport, with space in the middle area for ornamental plants and sufficient lighting facilities," he stated. He further confirmed that the project is scheduled for completion within the next two months.
