Bengaluru airport is set to become India's first multi-modal transport hub.

Tuesday 4th Apr 2023    207
Bengaluru airport is set to become India's first multi-modal transport hub.

Bengaluru :

The Multi-Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) will become India's first airport with such a facility. The MMTH will bring together several modes of transport under one roof, including private parking, taxi services and inter/intracity buses operated by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The facility will be connected to the Airport Terminals metro station, which is expected to be operational in 2026.

The MMTH hub will also integrate a luggage sorting area, a shopping area and dedicated parking spaces for different types of vehicles. It will accommodate more than 1,200 parking spaces, including spaces for private vehicles, vehicles for people with reduced mobility (PRM) and electric vehicles (EVs). The retail and F&B outlets at MMTH will span levels 1 and 0 (L1 &L0). Levels B1, B1.5 and B2 are reserved for parking, including bus spaces, while B3 will have a future baggage tunnel connecting T1 and T2. L0 (north) is for temporary parking and L0 (south) for app-based taxis.

In addition to serving airport passengers and staff, BIAL, which operates KIA, also hopes to attract private and KSRTC bus travelers between cities. For example, bus travelers going from Bengaluru to places like Tirupati and Hyderabad can reach the airport by metro (by 2026) and then take an intercity bus to their destination.

Currently, the KIA halt railway station is located in the northwest corner of the airport boundary, around 4.6 km from T1 and 5.6 km from T2. However, BIAL is working with Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Ltd to bring the rail network closer to the terminal forecourt area and to develop an underground rail station that can cater to both terminals. If this plan and design materialize, the proposed suburban railway station will be ideally located at less than 400 -500 meters from the MMTH.

The MMTH is expected to improve the efficiency of operations on the landside of the airport and improve the overall passenger travel experience.
