The Airports Authority of India has launched proceedings to receive 10.72 hectares of land from the Tamil Nadu government for the proposed airport in Vellore (AAI).
There are now a runway, taxiway, ground support equipment, air traffic control (ATC) and aviation information reception center, terminal building and oil depot at the airport that is being built on a 97-acre piece of land.
However, because the state government did not decide on the compensation package for acquiring real estate, the land acquisition process delayed the opening of the new airport.
According to sources who spoke to IANS, the government has now expedited the procedure and has begun acquiring the 10.72 acres of additional land needed for the airport.
A few years ago, the new Vellore airport received approval as part of the second phase of the UDAN-RCS (Ude Desh Ke Aam Nagrik-A Regional Connectivity Program). The Indian government is trying to connect smaller cities, especially those bordering large cities and second-class cities.
The famous Christian Medical College, Vellore's patients and the city's many students studying in its technical institutions — many of whom are from northern Indian states — will benefit from the city's new airport.
However, a private airline's recent statement that it will fly a 19-seater aircraft is considered the direct cause of the rapid resurgence of Vellore's airport-related business, including land purchase.
Importantly, General V.K. Singh, the Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, made his most notable visit to Vellore Airport in October 2022.
