Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) reported a 30 percent increase in cargo traffic at 556,900 metric tons (MT) for the year ended March 31, 2022 compared to the same period last year.
While international freight volumes increased by 26 percent, domestic freight volumes increased by 40 percent, an official statement said. Import volumes totaled 260,600 tons and exports amounted to 296,300 tons.
The top three destinations with the highest imports were China, Germany and the US respectively. The US, UAE and Germany were the top destinations in terms of exports, the statement said.
Automobiles, pharmaceuticals and technical goods saw the bulk of the transportation to top international destinations while the main domestic destinations witnessed the movement of technical goods, documents and samples and mail freight in FY22.
Top airlines dealing with the maximum freight in the domestic segment were IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoFirst. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines were the top three airlines handling maximum cargo internationally in FY22.
CSMIA treated 397 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, of which 58 million doses were exported to 76 destinations and 339 million doses were transported to 49 domestic destinations. In addition, the cargo terminal also handled 1,000 tons of oxygen concentrators, 50 tons of oxygen generators and 150 tons of Covid emergency medication.
