Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has become the first airport in India to run entirely on hydropower and solar energy as it has switched to renewable sources for its energy needs.
The move will help reduce energy emissions by 2 lakh tons of carbon dioxide per year, an important step towards achieving a net zero carbon emissions airport by 2030.
About 6% of the airport's electricity needs are covered by its own solar power plants. These factories are located on the airside of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and on the roofs of the Cargo terminals.
As of June 1, 2022, Delhi Airport has taken over the renewable energy use of the hydroelectric plant for the demand of the remaining 94%, ending its reliance on non-renewable energy.
