The Ministry of Civil Aviation is developing an expanded version of the regional air connectivity program, UDAN, which aims to ease access barriers and reduce operational costs. This initiative is intended to attract new participants. The program will include new categories such as seaplanes, small aircraft and helicopters, and will also focus on the development of low-cost regional airports.
Sources indicated that the final details of the scheme will be determined once the new government takes office next month. Currently, aircraft availability, high financing costs and regulatory standards, such as the requirement for a dedicated, proven operating history, act as barriers to potential new entrants. The new scheme will also aim to streamline the eligibility criteria for new operators of small aircraft in the 9 to 20 seat category.
