Infrastructure company GMR Group can now handle the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad until 2068.
The company told media that the central government had extended the concession agreement of GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) for another 30 years.
It was India's first greenfield airport to be developed under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The airport was commissioned in 31 months and inaugurated in March 2008.
Initially, the airport had a passenger capacity of 1.2 crore per year, which increased to 2.1 crore in 2019.
Currently, the airport is undergoing a major expansion project, which will increase passenger capacity to 3.4 crore annually. The airport plans to expand its capacity to 10 crore passengers annually.
The company said it is the largest private airport operator in Asia and the second largest in the world, with a passenger capacity of more than 18.9 crore per year. GMR Group operates airports in Delhi, Hyderabad and Cebu, Philippines.
It recently acquired the development and operation project of Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia. Furthermore, the company is developing three greenfield airport projects at the airports of Goa, Bhogapuram and Crete.
